The Un-Conference Format
The American Jewry (AJ) conferences follow the non-traditional discussion format of an "un-conference" -- a participant-driven event where attendees help shape the agenda and actively contribute to conversations rather than simply listening to scheduled speakers.
There are no experts about the future of American Jewry, but every person in the room has relevant expertise. Therefore, we seek to tap collective intelligence through wide diversity of opinions shared in a respectful dialogue.
Participants are invited because we believe they have a unique perspective to contribute and the ability to mobilize important constituencies around topics that matter to our community. Every person in the room has something to offer and together we can make a difference.
We curate the topics and assign moderators, panelists and respondents, but most of the time is allocated for sharing insights among all who are present. Sessions begin with a short framing by moderators and then brief opening remarks by panelists of 3 to 4 minutes. There are two invited respondents and then the floor will be open for “popcorn style” discussion of 90-second interventions. Panelists then share brief closing remarks.
